See our class’s action civics work in action

One of our History classes was profiled by the Massachusetts Department of Education’s Kaleidoscope Collective for Learning spotlighting deeper learning. Watch our class work on their Generation Citizen Action Civics project working on addressing water safety in schools.

I am passionate about civics education and ensuring my students have opportunities to develop their voice and their skills as active global citizens. We don’t just learn about civics, we engage in civics.

In my class my students learn to write powerful Op-Eds on issues they care about, a selection of which are published in our city newspaper.  My students work collectively, over the course of a semester, on tackling community issues, working for months advocating for systemic change on issues including: digital literacy, Islamophobia and food insecurity. Students meet with politicians, draft memos, and publish op-eds. Each year they present at the Massachusetts State House, and many of my classes have been honored with state-wide awards. They have created an in-school food pantry, a community gun buy back, and more.
