I have the honor of teaching history and civics to mostly immigrant and refugee students from more than thirty countries at a Massachusetts public high school.
My goals are to teach, mentor, and advocate for my students so they find belonging in the United States and to ensure they are academically prepared for college and careers. I develop frameworks to help other teachers support immigrant-origin students.
I love teaching history because my immigrant students are adopting our history and enriching it with their own. In our classroom we bring history to life.
After studying the Progressive Era, my students become modern-day progressives, writing Op-Eds about present-day issues and publishing them in the local newspaper. After studying 1900’s immigration, they share their migration stories in published cookbooks of family recipes. While studying the U.S. government, they practice civics by launching projects tackling community issues.
